What the gurus are saying

This hydrocortisone cream calms inflamed skin and reduces itching by tackling the inflammation that drives eczema flares, and dermatologists note it's gentle enough to use without a prescription. The tradeoff is that 1% hydrocortisone is mild, so it may not be strong enough for severe flares, dermatologists suggest spot-treating problem areas rather than using it all over, and pairing it with a separate moisturizer. Those waiting to see a dermatologist or dealing with minor flares may find it helpful for temporary relief.

"1% hydrocortisone is over the counter and is certainly mild, and with that you really can't run into too much trouble using it. But certainly what we worry about here is that it most likely won't do too much. But for those people who are not able to get into see a dermatologist immediately, you can certainly try this, it's pretty gentle, and to see if it can help to temporarily reduce the itching and soothe that inflamed skin. [...] I definitely do not recommend using it all over."

"Vanicream actually makes an over-the-counter topical skin medication called Vanicream HC. It has one percent hydrocortisone in it to treat minor skin flares of eczema, skin inflammation, itching, and psoriasis. Hydrocortisone is a very gentle topical steroid that you can get without a prescription that helps calm inflamed skin. It can even help bug bites stop itching. So this is another thing to keep in mind if you need something a little stronger than just a moisturizer to treat problem skin."
