What the gurus are saying

This tinted mineral sunscreen earns mixed takes on texture. Dr. Jenny Liu praises how elegantly it sits on skin once buffed in, noting the light tint flatters most skin tones and won't feel heavy or greasy for anyone. However, AliceintheRabbitHole and Cassandra Bankson both found the application gritty and difficult to blend, with Cassandra describing it as feeling like sandpaper on the skin. The split hinges on patience with mineral sunscreen application, so those new to mineral formulas may want to expect a longer buff-in time, while those seeking a genuinely invisible finish might find the texture frustrating.

"The guard's up daily mineral sunscreen, broad spectrum SPF 35, made with 15.2% zinc oxide, is the one product I didn't end up loving. It does have a tint. [...] It's not a bad mineral sunscreen, is it completely mineral, probably not, it does have octyl salicylate in it after all."
~Yay
"This is a really nice elegant purely mineral sunscreen so if you have sensitive skin or looking for a good elegant mineral sunscreen highly recommend trying this one. It does contain a light tint so the iron oxide is great at protecting against visible light something that we know can contribute to hyperpigmentation especially if your skin is of color. The tint is very light coverage even though it's just one shade I find it to be for the majority universally flattering."

"This is the Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen, and [...] when I first got this, I was like, oh my god, this is just such a terrible tinted sunscreen. Like this looks and feels disgusting. I can't put this on my face. [...] The grit in this is so disgusting when you do it. It feels like you're exfoliating your skin. It feels like sandpaper."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
