Dr. Vanita Rattan has reviewed more than 10 masks and peels, and she approved a little over half of them, landing at an approval rate of 55%. She named no category winner here, which is worth noting. Her bar is clearly high, and several well-known products did not make the cut.
What does Dr. Vanita Rattan recommend in masks & peels?
When she approved a product, the reasons were usually the same. She looks for gentle exfoliants that lift dead skin without stripping the barrier. She praised Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant warmly, saying she would buy it herself for oily skin. She was just as positive about Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 6% Mandelic Acid + 2% Lactic Acid Liquid Exfoliant, pointing out that mandelic and lactic acid are gentle enough for skin of color. She also praised COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid 4% for its anti-inflammatory first ingredient and good moisturizers. Fragrance-free formulas came up again and again as a must for her. She approved Beauty of Joseon Centella Asiatica Calming Mask, Numbuzin No.6 Deep Sleep Mask, and MIXSOON Bifida Mask Pack, and each time she noted they are free of fragrance and essential oils.
Dr. Vanita Rattan's face mask picks, in her words
"The only thing I'd say to you, which differs from the website, is to wear this only at night time for skin of color. I would never want you to exfoliate and then go out into the sun, where you have a barrage of free radicals on the skin thanks to the UV, which is not good for our skin. So I'd say wear this if you want to wear it, and wear it at night. But I absolutely love this product, and I would buy it if my main concern was oily skin."
"I also like Paula's Choice 6% mandelic plus 2% lactic, so that's 8% but of gentle AHAs. They're great for skin of color and the trick is to remove enough dead skin cells to see young, juicy, glowing skin. You want to make sure you're getting hydration into the top layer, so you want humectant in the actual chemical exfoliator, and ideally want gentle tyrosine inhibitors that can go deep into the skin and can help to calm down the melanocytes, the cells producing the pigment melanin."
"I actually really like this product. The first ingredient is Salix Alba bark water, which is a great anti-inflammatory. It has great moisturizers in it too, so it's got butylene glycol, panthenol, and arginine. Butylene glycol is quite good because it's a solvent but it also helps the other ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin. [...] It has 4% salicylate betaine."
"Make sure you do your skincare 2 hours before bed to make sure this doesn't come off on your sheets. So in here we've got a bunch of humectants plus niacinamide and it's fragrance-free. I love it. This is a Navesafe product. Highly recommend it. If you're going through menopause, your skin is feeling really tight and dry, put this on. If you've got a damaged skin barrier after your moisturizer, put this on. I really like this. Well done. 10 out of 10 on this product."
"So this product is paraben safe, no diol alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils, which is really important. A lot of masks out there have a lot of oil and fragrance in them, especially if they've got fruits on the mask. This is Lactobacillus ferment and you're basically occluding with it, which means that you've got this beautiful conditioner on the skin and now you're occluding which prevents water from evaporating from the skin. You're creating a healing environment for the skin."
"I really love this. It's very calming and it's hydrating. It's one that I would use on my own face. It's got glycerin in it plus it's got centella and it's acne safe. So this one I would say go and buy."

What has Dr. Vanita Rattan skipped in masks & peels?
She was firm about what she skipped, and her reasons were consistent. High acid concentrations were a real concern. She called The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution a disaster for certain skin types, warning it can cause burns and long-lasting hyperpigmentation. She gave the same warning about Minimalist 10% AHA + 2% BHA Face Exfoliating Serum, saying its glycolic and lactic acid load is actually worse. Denatured alcohol was the other dealbreaker. She gave Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel zero out of ten, pointing to denatured alcohol as its fourth ingredient and added fragrance as an absolute problem. She also skipped Anua Heartleaf LHA Peeling Gel, saying that combining physical exfoliation with a peeling gel on already-broken acne-prone skin was a mistake that should never have been made.
"The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution is a viral product all over TikTok that is a disaster for pretin skin. [...] It can burn the skin and lead to hyperpigmentation, and that can then sit on the skin for decades."
"This one is not Dr V approved. The next product is their AHA BHA pH product. I thought I had it but I don't have it. 25% AHAs, the second ingredient is glycolic acid, the third ingredient is lactic acid. That's actually worse than this product by the way, so that is the other product to absolutely avoid."
"The packaging and you never combine the two especially for acne prone sensitive skin which is already broken right you already every time you have pimple it's a damaged Skin Barrier you have inflammation and you've broken skin literally broken skin and now you put this on your face this is a problem and a mistake should never have been made"
"I mean they've done a good job, I can't smell that pungent smell, but I would never put fragrance in with acids. For me that is a big problem because acids are already likely to be irritating the skin. Add that with the chance of getting contact dermatitis, and anyone with skin of color, because I'm a cosmetic formulator for skin of color, I would never recommend this combination. The cost is 39 pounds for 30 mls. I mean that's insane, that's almost a pound per mil."
What should you take from Dr. Vanita Rattan's picks?
Dr. Rattan's record on masks and peels comes down to two questions: how strong is the acid, and is there fragrance or denatured alcohol in the formula? Products that pass both tests tend to win her approval. Those that fail either one are likely to get a hard skip, no matter how popular they are on social media.
