They've also added Invisishield complex, an antioxidant blend, but if you're going to create an antioxidant blend you should put it in an airless pump, which they haven't, so it destabilizes the formula a bit. It's fragrance-free and denatured alcohol-free, which I love. The miss really is the shade range, especially if you're Fitzpatrick 6, and it's priced quite expensively at £48 at Sephora. In 2026 I would rate Colorscience about 7 out of 10, and previously I would have rated it much higher.
Dr. Vanita Rattan: Nay vs gurus 76% Yay
It does leave a white cast on the skin, and that's the problem with this. Majority of the formulas on the shelves in America have been tested on Caucasian skin, and [...] our skin behaves very differently to the same formula. [...] The chemistry is right, with a good zinc oxide level and useful ceramides and niacinamide, but as a cosmetic formula it's not great for deeper skin tones.
Dr. Vanita Rattan: Nay vs gurus 87% Yay
It's a chemical sunscreen, not mineral, with SPF 50 and PA 4+, using the same chemical sunscreen as their other formulas, [...] which is not FDA approved. It contains denatured alcohol, which hastens water evaporation from the [...] skin and leads to [...] duller-looking skin. They also put in bitter orange, [...] an irritant, in a sunscreen you're about to wear in harsh UV. [...] It rubs in easily with no white cast, but it's terrible, [...] a zero out of 10.
Dr. Vanita Rattan: Nay vs gurus 69% Yay
It still required a lot of rubbing, and I really don't think it's a good idea to use around your eyes because it shouldn't be this difficult. It's very pungent, and even though there's no fragrance, [...] one of the oils gives off a strong essential oil smell. [...] I wouldn't recommend it if you have dry or inflamed skin, or oily skin because it could be comedogenic. I'm not happy with the results.

"The next product I like is from The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%. Again, it's around £8. This one is special. Azelaic acid treats both the acne and the dark marks in a single product. It's also safe to use in pregnancy."

"This isn't a treatment, it's an occlusive ointment. There are no tyrosinase inhibitors, there is no caffeine, and there is no retinoid. And it's in a jar, the worst form of packaging. You're dipping your finger in it every night and introducing bacteria. Plus, there's oxygen exposed every time you open the jar, and that beta-carotene is just going to oxidize on day one. So this is essentially a fragrance jar emollient at £32. It's going to do nothing for your dark circles."

"They have, however, used mandarin peel extract, which is a sensitizer to the skin. And then they've gone in with kakadu plum, which [...] breaks down too quickly, it's not a stable form of vitamin C. [...] And then they've gone in with rose extract, which is also a skin sensitizer. This is not actually the greatest of products, it started off well, but I think I would give this a maximum 7 out of 10. I wouldn't use it on my own face."

"The effective ingredients in this formula are niacinamide and alpha arbutin, which I both love. The form of vitamin C that they market in here is kakadu plum. The problem with this is that it tends to break down before it's even hit the skin, it's not the most effective form of vitamin C, and it's actually [...] not the most stable form of vitamin C, so it's not one that I would recommend. [...] So this product I give about 5.5 out of 10."

"I do like that they've added in licorice extract and it's in the therapeutic index, but they haven't stabilized the kojic acid, that's something I would say. I do like the heavy packaging, I think Hyphen has probably one of the best packaging in India. [...] The smell's actually not bad. This is probably my favorite depigmentation serum so far in what we've looked at."

"A better option is The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% plus hyaluronic acid, and it's only about $9 on Amazon. Mandelic acid is a larger molecule than glycolic acid, it penetrates more slowly and it's far less inflammatory. Use it twice a week at night and never on the same evening as retinol."

"You get anti-inflammatory effects from magnolia bark, enzymatic exfoliation from pineapple and papaya, [...] and a phytosterol system that supports the barrier. On pigmentation it's a softer, gentler pathway, not aggressive, though the [...] licorice root is at a lower dose. [...] It's genuinely naife safe and truly fragrance-free. The packaging is a dropper, adequate but [...] an airless pump would have been preferred to keep the vitamin C stable. At $48, it works, but it's slow and safe."

"The good news is it is skin safe: no denatured alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils. It's got a bit of a funky smell, but that's fine, it is what the ingredient is. It's got 15% ascorbic acid, so that's pure vitamin C, and again, too strong for skin of color. It's not in an airless pump. And honestly, the price to make this product is about £2 and they're selling it for £165, so I don't really like that massive mismatch. It's not warranted. It's a hard no."

"We lack ceramides for skin of color, so I love that CeraVe is going to use ceramides, that's what I love about the brand. The negatives, unfortunately, is this has got 10% L-ascorbic acid, which I don't love for us to be using every morning, it's too much, and it's not in an airless pump. And the sixth ingredient they've put in here is denatured alcohol. I really expected better from you, CeraVe. I'm sorry, this one's a definite no."

"It's in an airless pump. The only downside is that it's 15% L-ascorbic acid. Out of all of the vitamin C acids, the L-ascorbic acid is my favorite one by far. And if they'd literally picked any other form of vitamin C, I would love this product, but they've gone for the gold standard for Caucasian skin, L-ascorbic acid. It's just not the best for skin of color. So, unfortunately, it's a no for me if you have skin of color, but if you have Caucasian skin, this is the best by far."

"The fifth ingredient here is tetrahexyl decanoate. Well done. The sixth ingredient in here is tranexamic acid which is a lovely tyrosinase inhibitor. And they've added in 3-O ethyl ascorbic acid. So even though it's not in an airless pump, I actually really like the formula. It's £40. So it's not cheap, but what I would say is for this formula to be more effective, it should be in an airless pump. But actually, I quite like the formula."

"Denatured alcohol leads to premature aging and because it generates free radicals in the skin, the exact opposite of what the vitamin C is trying to do. So, this is ridiculous. They also add in fragrance and that's what that beautiful smell is. If something's smelling lovely, it's a problem for our skin because don't forget 3 to 4% of the population gets contact dermatitis from fragrance. And for skin of color that can lead to hyperpigmentation. [...] So for me, this product is a disaster."

"The negatives are that it's got coconut alkanes, which is why it's coming out quite oily. I don't think this is going to be ideal for people with acne. No other antioxidants in this product and it's not in an airless pump. It's fragrance free, which I love, and it's NAF safe, meaning no denatured alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils. But for me, I'd say it's not really worth your time or your money. Even though it's not that expensive, it's one that I'd avoid."

"It's naive safe, no denatured alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils. And there are other antioxidants in this product, which is brilliant. It's an airless pump. Brilliant. And it's got glycerin in it, too. So, a humectant. So, it's done a lot right. I think the only downside for me probably is the high price point. So, it's £61 for 30 mls. But, if you can afford it, it's a wonderful, wonderful vitamin C. Definitely doctor approved."

"It's a beautiful derivative vitamin C. It's got [...] vitamin E. [...] They put nothing in here to strengthen the skin barrier or to increase cell turnover. But I actually really like this as a simple cheap vitamin C. So if you're thinking about starting vitamin C and you've never done it before, this is a really good place to start. It's got no irritants, nothing that's going to sensitize your skin. It's a fantastic product for acne-prone skin. And actually it's very good for teen acne. "Retinol palmitate is one step removed, it has to be converted to retinol, and it's one of the weakest forms of vitamin A. [...] They add in an apple stem cell extract, but the clinical evidence on actual cosmetic formulas in human skin is thin. They did add in bakuchiol oil, which is a genuine ingredient, but it's after the preservative system in the ingredient list, so it's almost certainly less than 1%. I really don't like this formula. "They added in linalool plus hexyl cinnamal. [...] Now skin of color around that eye area, that's a sensitizer overload and it's a slow pigmentation driver. I also don't love the fact this is a jar and you have to keep dipping your finger in. So for this formula, because of the fragrance, it's going to get a lower mark at five out of 10 for fine lines. But for dark circles, I give it a two or three out of 10 because it does contain the caffeine, but really no tyrosinase inhibitors, and it's £62."
