The Budget Dermatologist has worked through more than 90 sensitive skin products, and her record is striking: she approved almost everything she tried. That is not a rubber stamp, though. She brings a clear set of values to every review, and the small pile of skips tells you just as much as the long list of winners.
What does The Budget Dermatologist recommend for sensitive skin?
What she keeps coming back to is value. She loves products that do the job well without charging extra just for the brand name, and she says so by name: La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5, Vaseline Original Healing Jelly, and Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser are among at least 20 winners she named here. She takes ingredients seriously too. When she praised the La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Gentle Foaming Moisturizing Wash, she pointed to its niacinamide, shea butter, and fragrance-free formula as the reasons it works for eczema-prone skin. She is just as enthusiastic about stable vitamin C, calling the Paula's Choice C15 Super Booster a holy grail for building collagen and fading dark spots, at a fraction of the cost of pricier options. For sunscreen she also thinks about what else the formula does: her top pick, the Colorescience Unforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF 50, earns its place partly because it adds niacinamide and claims protection beyond UV rays.
The Budget Dermatologist's sensitive skin picks, in her words
"The C15 Super Booster is a holy grail from Paula's Choice because it is a stable form of vitamin C, L ascorbic acid, and it has vitamin E and ferulic acid in it as well. It's a great product at a fraction of the price of the SkinCeuticals one. I like to use vitamin C in the morning skincare routine to help build new collagen, to help lighten dark spots and fade hyperpigmentation, and just brighten and tone the skin."
"My number one recommendation for a sunscreen is Color Science Unforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF 50. The unique thing about this sunscreen is it's claimed to go beyond just UVA and UVB protection and additionally protect against blue light, but also it gives environmental protection from pollution and infrared radiation due to their patented EnviroScreen technology. This sunscreen has niacinamide in it, which is one of my favorite skincare ingredients."
"This is usually the base when I want a medium to heavier coverage on the skin and also some SPF protection in there. So this is something that I use all the time and I'm obsessed with it. It's actually really affordable when you compare it to makeup equivalents because makeup brands are just really expensive. [...] I highly recommend this, especially if you have melasma because this has a really high iron oxide concentration, tinted mineral-only, so this is incredible for melasma patients."
"The Cetaphil Skin Renewing Night Cream is one of my all-time favorite night creams. [...] I love this one because it is the most effective at really repairing dry skin, flaky skin, or eczema prone skin. It is more of a balm like texture, so it's kind of even thicker than a cream but it's not an ointment. It's [...] very occlusive on the skin but not greasy or anything like that compared to Vaseline or something. This is an incredible product."
"My favorite body wash is the La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP Plus Moisturizing Body Wash because it has niacinamide in it and is very nourishing for the skin."
"This is my actual most favorite luxury sunscreen splurge of all time, [...] maybe my number one favorite sunscreen ever. It's EltaMD UV Skin Recovery, [...] the green tinted version, because I have rosacea prone, redness prone skin and green cuts red. [...] This leaves my skin better than before after I use it because [...] the UV Skin Recovery formulation can repair your skin barrier while it's protecting your skin from the sun. No white cast, [...] this is all mineral."
How many products has The Budget Dermatologist reviewed for sensitive skin?
The Budget Dermatologist has reviewed 82 products for sensitive skin, for an approval rate of 89%. 73 approved, 5 mixed, and 4 skipped.
What has The Budget Dermatologist skipped for sensitive skin?
Her skips almost all follow the same logic: she will not approve a plain moisturiser that costs a lot simply because of its label. She looked at several Avène moisturisers, including the Avène Hydrance Cream and Avène A-Oxidative Cream, and said firmly that you can get the same hydration for far less from brands like CeraVe, Eucerin, or La Roche-Posay. She gave the Avène Cleansing Gel the same treatment, saying cheaper cleansers do the job just as well. If a product is basically a basic moisturiser with a luxury price tag, she says to save your money.
"These are essentially just moisturizers and I firmly believe that you can get very high quality moisturizers for way less money than these. [...] Both of these are a no for me. You should save your money instead."
"The cream and emulsion are at a higher price for essentially just a moisturizer. I believe you can get incredible hydration of your skin in a simple moisturizer without spending a fortune."
"The Cleanance Hydra Soothing Cream is essentially a barrier repair moisturizer. It is not mattifying. I do not think this one is worth the spend. Instead, I would opt for a more affordable barrier repair moisturizer by CeraVe, Eucerin, or La Roche Posay."
"If you have a very light skin tone you can choose the non-tinted version, but I would say to skip this and choose a more affordable non-tinted sunscreen option, for which there are plenty of good drugstore products. I only think their two tinted options are worth the spend because those are unique enough."
What should you take from The Budget Dermatologist's picks?
Her record on sensitive skin is one of the most generous you will find, with an approval rate of 89% and at least 20 products she called outright winners. But that warmth comes with a condition: she believes barrier repair, hydration, and gentle cleansing are all doable on a modest budget, and she will call out any product that asks you to pay more than the formula is worth.
