What the gurus are saying

This balm earns consistent praise for removing makeup and sunscreen while leaving skin feeling hydrated and calm, thanks to black rice extract (rich in antioxidants and skin-barrier support) and chia seed extract (packed with omega-3s to nourish irritated skin). It also contains a very fine physical exfoliant from chestnut shell that most people barely notice during use. The one drawback: it can make the sink a bit messy during rinsing.

"This one is so super cozy and so comfy. This kind of shaves just a thin layer. This is such a soft creamy texture. This is one of those calming, soothing cleansing balms. This uses black rice. I love anything rice in a cleanser. It also has chia seeds. It transforms pretty much a touch to a silky, rich oil, but it's not oily. This melts all manner of makeup, including eye makeup, and emulsifies beautifully."

My 2025 Skincare Heroes!
"From House of Her, their Midnight Soothing Cleansing Balm. This is the one that meets all my criteria without compromise. Melts everything off effortlessly, including very stubborn eye makeup. Emulsifies beautifully with water. Rinses off completely clean without residue. The texture of this is such comforting elegance to a point where it's almost creamy. There's no waxiness and the color comes from the main ingredient, which is black rice extract. Rice cleansers will always be top picks for me."

"House of Hur cleansing balms are some of my favorites. I don't think they're anything crazy special, but that's also why I find myself reaching for them time and time again. I just know they're going to do the job they have to do, which is remove makeup and sunscreen and leave my skin feeling really nice and kind of like moisturized after."

"I feel like a lot of you are going to join me in the love for their Midnight Soothing Cleansing Balm. This is for sensitive skin. I consider my skin quite sensitive. If I overuse actives in skincare, if I overuse exfoliators, if I have to remove my makeup once or twice a day, my skin gets really, really sensitive. And it is just sensitive in general, especially after shaving or something like that. This has one of my favorite ingredients in it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
